Make the Holidays Merry and Bright with A Dramatic Home Lighting Installation!

A famous person once said, “Everyone shines, given the right lighting.”  We agree Black truffles and old Burgundy, as recommended by the experts at Food & Wine  are more flavorful under dramatic lighting.  Visualize the glow on the faces of your family members, friends and neighbors as you celebrate the holidays and special occasions at your table.

What do you think of this galaxy of Graypants‘ Moon, Disc, Luna, Drop and for good measure, Ohio, in bleached white?   This recent residential installation designed by

Switch’ creative director Drew Dearwester and lighting specialist Bethany Smith, enters our Install Hall of Fame.

We’d love to create a special lighting feature for you in time for the holidays.  Give us a call at (513) 721-8100 or email us for a consultation.   Of course you’re welcome to visit our new showroom at 312 West Fourth Street (at Plum).  Our hours are M-S, 10-6.

From Winter with Love…

It’s colder in Cincinnati today than in Juneau, Alaska.  This deep chill has sent my mind drifting to last years’ vacation in Quito, Ecuador

and more recently to Solidaridad just outside Playa del Carmen: warm, vibrant…and surprisingly modern.

Mexico and South America are replete with modern art, inventive architecture and minimalistic hotels, inns and resorts.  Thayer Coggin, featured at Switch Lighting & Design on Fourth, our new downtown Cincinnati lighting and furniture showroom, would be equally at home in these sun-drenched modern locales as in a cozy cabin,  a cloud capped high rise apartment or a toasty suburban Center-Hall colonial.

For an appointment…and a cup of our “special” hot chocolate,  email Drew or Bertie today. You’re also welcome to drop in anytime between 10-6 Monday – Saturday.

Cruisin’ into fall in style and comfort; Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin; Autumn: Shakespeare, Keats and Dunbar

Thayer Coggin delivers fall perfection: Crisp sunny day.  Starry night. Roaring fire. Mingus on the Carouso.  Snifter laced with a few splashes of Old Scout all while deep chilln’ in your leather Cruisin’.  Milo Baughman’s iconic chair and ottoman are primo in the gentlemen’s guide to fine living and lounging. Ladies love it too, especially in espresso with dark bronze finish.  Come to Switch on Fourth (312 West Fourth)  to experience this masterpiece of American craftsmanship.  We’re taking orders now for holiday arrival: (513) 421-1901.

A Sonnet and 2 Poems to Autumn: Shakespeare, Keats and Dunbar

“That time of year thou mayst in me behold (Sonnet 73)” by William Shakespeare

That time of year thou mayst in me behold
When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang
Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,
Bare ruined choirs, where late the sweet birds sang.
In me thou see’st the twilight of such day
As after sunset fadeth in the west;
Which by and by black night doth take away,
Death’s second self, that seals up all in rest.
In me thou see’st the glowing of such fire,
That on the ashes of his youth doth lie,
As the deathbed whereon it must expire,
Consumed with that which it was nourished by.
This thou perceiv’st, which makes thy love more strong,
To love that well which thou must leave ere long.

“To Autumn” by John Keats

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells.

Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;
Or on a half-reap’d furrow sound asleep,
Drowsed with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers:
And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
Steady thy laden head across a brook;
Or by a cider-press, with patient look,
Thou watchest the last oozings, hours by hours.

Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?
Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,–
While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day,
And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue;
Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
Among the river sallows, borne aloft
Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
The redbreast whistles from a garden-croft,
And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

“Merry Autumn” by Paul Laurence Dunbar

It’s all a farce,—these tales they tell
About the breezes sighing,
And moans astir o’er field and dell,
Because the year is dying.

Such principles are most absurd,—
I care not who first taught ’em;
There’s nothing known to beast or bird
To make a solemn autumn.

In solemn times, when grief holds sway
With countenance distressing,
You’ll note the more of black and gray
Will then be used in dressing.

Now purple tints are all around;
The sky is blue and mellow;
And e’en the grasses turn the ground
From modest green to yellow.

The seed burs all with laughter crack
On featherweed and jimson;
And leaves that should be dressed in black
Are all decked out in crimson.

A butterfly goes winging by;
A singing bird comes after;
And Nature, all from earth to sky,
Is bubbling o’er with laughter.

The ripples wimple on the rills,
Like sparkling little lasses;
The sunlight runs along the hills,
And laughs among the grasses.

The earth is just so full of fun
It really can’t contain it;
And streams of mirth so freely run
The heavens seem to rain it.

Don’t talk to me of solemn days
In autumn’s time of splendor,
Because the sun shows fewer rays,
And these grow slant and slender.

Why, it’s the climax of the year,—
The highest time of living!—
Till naturally its bursting cheer
Just melts into thanksgiving.

Inspiration: Transitional Fixtures

Today we are giving you all some inspiration for fixtures that we consider transitional. A transitional fixture is a fixture that is contemporary, but also fits in well with a traditional design. Basically, they’re the best of both worlds! Take a look at a few of our favorite transitional pieces:

Inspiration: Flush Mounts

Today we are going to share some inspiration for you all in the form of flush mounts. Flush mounts may not seem like the most exciting form of lighting. Often pendants and suspension pieces acquire most of the attention. Flush mounted fixtures can also offer a wonderful aesthetic while not going overboard or blocking your line of sight. Take a look at some of our favorites:

Inspiration: Sculptural ‘Art’ Fixtures

Here at Switch we carry a variety of lighting fixtures that are so unique and so sculptural they can be considered pieces of art. Using these fixtures can be a great way to incorporate art into your home or business while also providing needed lighting! Take a look at a few of our favorite artistic pieces:

Inspiration: Using Bold Colors

Today we are sharing some inspiration with you all for incorporating bold colored fixtures into your homes and designs! One important thing to keep in mind when using bold colors is to make sure you’re not going overboard with them. Too many contrasting colors can be overwhelming, as well as too much of the same color. Generally bold colors work best when they are used more as a focal point or accent amongst muted colors such as white, grey, or tan. Take a look at a few designs where bold colored fixtures are used well:

Inspiration: Not Your Typical Chandelier
